"GYPSIES OF KRĀSLAVA"
Krāslava is part of Latgale, one of Latvia’s poorest and most eastern regions with a higher number of ethnic Russians than ethnic Latvians. In this Soviet-Era town, a small community of Gypsies (Roma People) live out there lives. Conflicted between facing prejudice in the larger western cities, while seeking the opportunities that being in the European Union Offers ( as opposed to migrating to Russia, as most speak fluent Russian, many with family ties in the further east), This Eastern Town is a refuge, a midpoint, and a place to call home. Its an iconic example of how the centuries old Roma people have survived the changing borders and politics of the Baltic States. The following images document a series of families which were interviewed and the area of Krāslava itself. Within this community many of the ancient Roma traditions and observant practices are still followed, including wedding and birth rituals, and a community tribunal of elders to resolve conflicts.
