on assignment in KRĀSLAVA, LATVIA. 2017
At the core of all of these projects and inquiries is a human (myself) seeking to connect with others, learning both the greater context of oneself and others within the world. A passion for communication beyond language, led to working with the image, as all people regardless of education or background will respond intuitively when viewing images. The metaphor of camera, the beauty of working in a universal language, and love of learning of all the far reaches of the globe, has fueled the drive for this work. The following text is a deeper explanation of these works and their inspirations:
In considering differences we will encounter similarities: and in a sense as inhabitants of a common planet and species we are much more alike than we are different. Our experiences share parallels in both the struggles and pleasures of life.
Through the lens both mentally, and technically, the act taking photos/and media documentation is in the most basic sense -an investigation into our already ongoing and automatic natural acts of perception.
There is still no camera which can function at the same level of complexity in changing conditions as the human eye can; but by placing an artifice (camera) in front of our face and in our hands, one can begin another process. The complicated, fascinating, and meaningful dialogue of what it means to take pictures and what exactly an image does or does not.
In the places where people live and die; small towns, third tier cities, and typical not-so-special regions. These are as full of history and beauty as any place could ever be, each with its own galaxy of humanity within it. So much of what we determine in our life, is decided by the image and its infinite interpretations. It is my hope these images function as communication, sharing one place with another, from one set of eyes to another.
These projects are both a professional and personal passion, which consider the sharing of truth, of place, and of symbolic captured moments, to be a meaningful pursuit.
