"BEIJING ROUGH" 北京粗糙
Beijing, China: A city of over 21.7 million people is a bustling and chaotic construct of human centralization. These images give a sens of the people who live in and around Beijing, and whose daily lives are part of the endless and tiresome cycles of destruction and construction of which the government imposes. These images were documented during a series of forced evictions in November 2017. While not of the evictions specifically, the photos offer a wider view in place and time. Many of these images were captured on the eastern edge of the outer rings of the city. Some of the most intense demolition and rebuilding is happening in previously industrial areas with the future goal of turning Beijing into a purely cultural and educational capitol, with factories and workers being pushed out. While Beijing certainly has its share of opulence like any other majestic grand city, within a short ride in a specific direction, one can pass by places that seem like temporary apocalypses. The questions rise as to who gets to decide how a place should be, and what happens when a life is uprooted.
